The inaugural but already successful Hickory Challenge to support The First Tee of Raritan Valley was held on October 14 at gorgeous Hamilton Farm Golf Club in Gladstone, NJ. This unique event was played on Hamilton Farm’s 18-hole Hickory Course, the only USGA-rated par-3 course in the USA, and offered fabulous hole-in-one and /or closest-to-the-hole prizes on every hole.
In a departure from most other charity events, the tournament included 18 of the best students in the core TFTRV development program. Each of these kids were paired up with three adults to form a team. It was a great way for the sponsors and their guests to see, first-hand, results of the work The First Tee is doing.
In addition to stunning hole prizes (for example, a trip for four to Pebble Beach), competition was also keen for the low team and low individual prizes. The low team award went to three players representing Baltusrol Golf Club (Andy Stock, Jim Brown, and Terry Yun) and their TFTRV student (Christopher Ng). The low individual prize went to Jim Brown, who shot a sterling 57 (3 over par)in his first trip to this notoriously tough track.
Among the many closest-to-the-hole prizes, Susan Naftal won a set of TaylorMade irons!
“Starting with such an impeccable venue, then adding a creative and inclusive format that featured our kids, we could hardly wait to see how the event would turn out,” said Co-Chair Scott Pester. “Great weather helped make it a perfect event. We are already looking ahead to next year’s event.”
Make plans now to participate in next year’s Hickory Challenge, on Columbus Day 2014.
